Baby piccies

November 1, 2010

Blair’s babies are doing well, they’ve just opened their eyes and one or two are going for a little wander. Here are a few photos taken earlier in the week, now I know what colours and markings we have.

Very excited that I have three variegateds:

5 of them are black berkshire, like their Dad

I have two that I think are British Blue agoutis but they do appear to be slightly different shades

And five are agouti. I’m not sure yet which are berkshires and which are self, but they all have white feet and the one with the splodgy blaze is definitely a berkie and will probably stay here:

Blue babies

August 15, 2010

I have been looking forward to blue babies for so long, as British Blue is the variety is I originally decided I wanted to breed. However, at one point I did wonder if I would ever get any!

Evie, the one doe I have for my blue line took three tries to get pregnant, with two different bucks! But she has finally had a litter. It’s a small one, only 5 babies, 4 boys and 1 girl I think. I was after a couple of blue girls from her litter, but the one girl she has had is a either blue or blue agouti so she has been a clever mum in that respect!

Here are some piccies, taken today at a week old:

Bella’s babies now all have homes lined up and have been split from their Mum today. They are turning into really nice rats and I will get some new pics of them to put on here soon.

New Arrivals

July 20, 2010

I am pleased to say we have a litter of babies. They were born on 9th June and Rivendell Bella and Aquarius Dewar are the proud parents.

Bella has a litter of 12, and has 3 boys and 9 girls! Here are a few piccies from a couple of days ago:

5 agouti girls:

4 Black girlies:

Some of these will be available to go to loving pet homes. If you are interested in homing Northern Lights rats, please look at the website for information and contact details: http://www.northern-lights-rats.co.uk

We had a lovely day at the SRC show on 6th June. It was my first show as show sec and while it was very busy it was also good fun and I’m looking forward to next time.

The ratties did well too. It was the first SRC starred show and only about half a dozen rats were given stars and two of them were mine! Here are my winners:

Rivendell Babs, 1st Silver Fawn (1 star)

Aquarius Dewar, 1st Agouti, Stud Buck (2 stars)

Aquarius Nedd, 1st Black

Northern Lights Angus, 1st Adult Owned Pet Buck

Newcy, 1st Best Rescue

I am particularly proud of Angus as he is my first home bred rat and he won a big class so I was really delighted when he won.

Coastboat Fratton

May 28, 2010

I said yesterday that I took on Fratton as she was ‘spare’. She is absoloutely beautiful. She is an Ivory, so off white with beautiful black eyes which is such a stunning combination.

She came from Coastboat Rattery and was collected on a trip to NFRS Portsmouth show, along with the RCT Rattery girlies and the Aquarius Rattery boys.

When I got home with them it was quite late and I was tired, so I left them in their carriers they’d travelled up the road in. When I went to see them the next day I was mortified to find Fratton and sister Ashton out of the carrier, blood everywhere where they’d caught their feet breaking out of the mesh on the carrier. Ashton was sat on top of the girls’ cage, Fratton I couldn’t see. I soon found her, sitting happily in the boys’ cage!

Just over three weeks later, on 18th May, she gave birth to 14 babies. 12 have survived and are doing well. She is also doing fine. I will post some pictures tomorrow of the little ones, but here is Fratton:

New Girls

February 17, 2010

I have recently been down to England to visit family and combined this with a visit to the Burgess Excel Bradford Small Livestock Show in Harrogate, where I collected 2 silver fawn does from Ann Storey (Rivendell Stud) and another visit to lovely Phil & Sue of Aquarius Rattery who kindly let me have a black doe.

The two silver fawns have been named Bella and Babs (Rivendell Aarabella and Rivendell Barbaraville) and the black girly is Evie (Aquarius Evelix).

They are currently living together just the three of the them as failed intros saw Bella up the vets to get a gash stitched up! But I am planning on trying again when the older girls have calmed down and got used to all of them living together!!

Here are a few pics of the three babies, I will get better ones of them at some point and update the website with their own pages as well.

All three girlies all cuddled together

One of either Bella or Babs!

And again!

The boys are getting big…

January 26, 2010

I took some photos of the boys the other day as they are now 5 months old and getting lovely and big. Farleigh especially is getting a real round lump! Here are some pics:

Bye Bye Tinkerbell & Sugar

January 13, 2010

Had to make a trip to the vets with Tinkerbell & Sugar today. They had both started to get very old and were struggling to get around and had both got very skinny. Tinks in particular was in a very bad way, with a nasty scab on her tummy so I thought it kindest to send them on their final journey together.

Tinkerbell 14/02/07 – 13/01/10

My longest lived rat (so far) came from down in Falkirk from a breeder who had taken on a rescue litter. Tinkerbell and Doughnut were the 3rd and 4th rats I ever had. Steve named Tinkerbell and it was always too dainty a name for the sort of rat she was! She got called Tinks or Tinky for short.

She was a little hooligan, always out to play for the longest when she was younger and she could be a little bit arguementative with the other girls. She was never a cuddly rat when she was younger but after she got spayed she would sit still for longer on me and at one time actually got quite clingy. As she got older she preffered to sleep and would give me a little nip if she didn’t want to come out of bed at cleaning out time. She loved the company of other rats and would always be found snuggled up with Sugar.

And again on her first birthday.

Bye Bye Tinks, we’ll miss you loads, go find Doughnut and the other girlies.

Sugar – ?/2007 – 13/01/10

Sugar was a very special rat. She was the first rat that had babies here and gave me the perfect introduction to raising baby ratties. She arrived late September 2007 and 4 days later gave birth to 11 little ones. She was fine with me handling them from day 1. Her favourite thing while I was handling and weighing her babies was to stash food under my pillow! I would go to bed and find a little pile of (thankfully) dry rat food. She outlived all of the six of her children that stayed here.

Sugar loved food. She was always too fat but it just added to her cuddly charm. She was the perfect rat to introduce to those that didn’t like rats. She would have cuddles with anyone, just sitting quietly on your shoulder or in your arms, just loving being loved.

She was also great with other rats. She never picked a fight and was always gentle and loving. If a rat was ill Sugar would be put with them to keep them company. She would lie across an ill companion, protecting and grooming them and even did this to Tinks today on their last trip to the vets.

I know we’re not allowed favourites but she was one of mine and I shall miss her so much.

Bye Bye special girly, go find your kids and the other girlies. They’ll be waiting for a cuddle.

Doing her favourite thing – eating!

and again, this time stealing corn on the cob with Doughnut

And one of the last pics taken of her, in Oct/Nov 2009

Losing these two is the end of an era. Between Jan 2007 and Jan 2008 my numbers grew from my first two rats (Charlotte and Treacle) to 17 rats, and then in 2008 I only got 3 new ones. Tinks and Sugar are the last two from this first year of rat keeping, my two very special old ladies.
